The guard members were Vikings and the origins of the name Varangian is from the Norse name Väring and the word Vár, which means Fidelity. During the same period, a man destined to be a local Viking leader was born in the village of Kareby. Kareby later grew to become Linkoping, and that mans name was Väring.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eIt is now 1000 years since Väring and his crew returned back after having supported King Knut when he claimed the English throne in 1016. One can only imagine how he was greeted upon return with their share of the reward. GoS honors the 1000 year anniversary of Värings return by creating our first Bronze watch. Bronze was the most common metal to be used and mastered by Vikings. Steel was mainly for weapons while Bronze was preferred for most other items, both decorative and functional. The case of GoS Väring has a center ring in Stainless damascus steel while all other parts are made of Bronze. The shape and overall design of the case is recognizable from previous GoS models but with new viking-inspired details added. Some of the changes are subtle, like the lug shape which has been altered to better resemble the bow ornaments of viking ships. Others are immediately identifiable as viking elements such as the viking loop knot patterns on the lugs, for example.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eThe chapter ring and hands are also made of Bronze and share the same finishing elements with rich contrasts between pre-patinized slightly darkened surfaces and polished chamfers. GoS has always aimed to create rich contrasts in our Damascus steel finishing and bring this to the Bronze finishing too. The hands for the Väring watch features the familiar viking spear outline but will premiere a newly developed surface finishing that makes the surface appear to be curved, just like spear heads. It is inspired by the traditional Swiss Côtes de Genève but done in a new way.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eVäring´s ship\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003ePrince Knut of Denmark needed brave and skilled men to help him claim the throne of England after the death of his father in 1014. His brother Harald, who was then King of Denmark assisted his brother in gathering a fleet of Vikings. The news of Prince Knut´s plans quickly spread throughout southern Scandinavia and the local Viking leader in Kareby and his younger brother decided to join as allies. Väring gathered a crew of the bravest men in the region to sail towards Denmark and join the large fleet during spring of 1015. The fleet set sails for England with an estimated 200 longships and was described by Queen Emma of Normandy to have “so many kinds of shields, that you could have believed that troops of all nations were present. … Gold shone on the prows, silver also flashed on the variously shaped ships”.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eThe force was to engage in many hard battles of which practically all were fought against the eldest son of King Ethelred II, Edmund Ironside. Knut was able to conquer England bit by bit and claimed the throne in 1016 after King Ethelred died in April 1016 and his son was finally defeated in Essex, in October of the same year. After two years, King Knut felt sufficiently in control of his new kingdom to the extent of being able to pay off all\u003cbr\u003ebut 40 ships of his fleet with their share of the Danegeld. Danegeld was a tribute vikings collected and King Knut had a total of almost 30 tons of silver coins minted during his first two year in England. Some of Väring´s men stayed in England to join the King´s elite troops while Väring returned back to Kareby with his share of the Danegeld. His younger brother was however one of the many Vikings who died in the battles. Väring honored him by having a large stone carved and erected on a hill upriver from Kareby.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eGoS presentation box\u003cbr\u003eDesigned by GoS and Handcrafted by Kanevad’s master woodcarver, Håkan Jansson. Sometimes the shapes appear as fold upon fold of luminous draperies that majestically move across the sky. Other times they are like gigantic flaming swords furiously slashing at the heavens. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Aurora's Damascus steel dial has been tempered to a blue-green color and the flowing colored lines are framed by bright streaks. The white gold dial details and hands match the highlights on the dial. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The movement is based on a chronometre grade Unitas 6498 that has been modified with 3\/4 bridges made from one solid piece of handforged damascus steel. The steel pattern is similar to the woodgrain pattern that is used for the GoS caliber. Both Johan and Patrik appreciate contrasts in designs and patterns, which is why Patrik chose to give the bridges a combination of traditional movement finishing on some surfaces and a more raw damascus steel on others. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Traditional high end movement finishing is time consuming. A similar amount of work is required to achieve the raw damascus steel surface. The bridges are mirror polished before the pattern is made visible by dipping the part in hot acid. The acid eats away from the surface of some steel types that has been forged into the patterned steel while others are not affected. This means that all surfaces where tolerances must be kept also have to be protected from the acid. The finishing continues after the etching procedure to give back some brightness to the pattern and increase the contrasts in the pattern itself. The polished bevels and holes are then finalized after the damascus steel surface is done. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The Aurora case features the same finishing improvements on the damascus steel case that GoS developed for the Midnight Sun model. It has the familiar curved surface of the damascus steel case¬¥core, which pattern is mirrored in the high gloss, polished large case back and bezel. The curved lugs and a low height makes the watch comfortable to wear even though it is 45mm in diameter. The damascus steel cases are individually finished in a process Patrik initially developed for Nordic Seasons and Winter Nights. It involves two etching procedures in hot acid and refinishing in between. It is only the visible parts of the case that are exposed to the acid to ensure that the case will have the same water protection as before the treatment. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The hands of the Aurora are made in solid white gold and have the GoS sword shape that once premiered in the Stockholm model. All hands and index rings are hand finished with polished bevels and satinized top. The stronger expression of the new Sarek lugs also provides more surface area for Anders to adorn, as does the back of the case which is now home to a mirrored engraving of the bezel as well as elaborate scroll patterns that frame the engraved text.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe origin of the Trollius name came when Anders and Patrik decided to introduce hand-polished gold pins as a design element. Polished 24k gold pins are something premium knife makers sometimes use to embellish their work. Trollius Europaeus (Globeflower) is a flower with yellow buds that is common in Sarek National Park in northern Sweden. The scrollwork for the watch resembles the petals of the Trollius flower and the gold pins emulate the yellow buds. A refinement introduced with the 2nd edition is the straight grinding by Anders in the elliptical grooves before he rivets and polish the gold pins. This finishing detail creates a contrast between the grooves in the case ring while highlighting the polished gold pins themselves.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA prominent new feature is the use of a glass ring as chapter ring, which is a detail that originated in the Norrsken collection. The ring is recessed into the damascus steel dial and allows a view through onto the pattern while certain angles instead create a golden glow within the glass. This is accomplished by hand-applying gold enamel both to the milled hour indexes but also to the outer edge of the glass ring.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eLa Joux-Perret introduced a new automatic movement with a 65 hour power reserve in 2021 and this is the movement of choice for the 2nd edition of Sarek. The G101 movements are manufactured to GoS specification, which includes the anthrazite finish, and are equipped with a skeletonized and beveled rotor. GoS sometimes introduce bespoke pieces as official GoS models and the Sarek Rissa was so spectacular when it was finished in September, that Patrik decided to offer it to other GoS clients in a limited production.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSarek Rissa has a glass index ring, which is a detail that originated in the Norrsken collection. It's a dial that mirrors the randomness of frost and ice patterns, with the enduring charm of an icy frame serving as indexes.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eGoS has a long tradition of working with like-minded parties who share the same passion for craftsmanship and creativity. However, finding a dial manufacturer and suppliers willing to tackle the intricate task of crafting the sapphire ice and frost details proved to be a challenging endeavor. It took nearly a year before manufacturing could be started with a total of five collaborating Swiss artisans that were selected for their specialist knowledge. Each artisan plays an instrumental role in the making of the various dial components, with the curved and polished sapphire pieces being the most demanding to manufacture.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe dials encompass a sunray finish, along with glossy transparent and matte white hues, recreating the sparkling, shimmering appearance of frost. This is a first for GoS and, to the brand’s best knowledge, the first time it’s ever been employed in the watch industry. The spaces positioned in between each block of sapphire denote the hours.
