History of Audemars Piguet
In 1875, Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet got together to develop and sell watches. However, they officially founded the company in 1881 in Le Brassus, Switzerland after the two watchmakers had already produced exclusive mechanical pocket watches from home for six years. This place in the Vallée de Joux was already one of the centers of watchmaking at that time, which was ideal for the founders to fall back on other watchmakers' knowledge and skills. Both founders came from watchmaking families and were familiar with the craft. They each completed training as a repasseur, meaning that they had experience with repassage (French for inspection) of assembled watches. Although both were familiar with making movements, Jules spearheaded this in the new company, while Edward attended the business side.
From the beginning, the company's focus was on the production of its watches and movements, and just eight years after it was founded, the company produced a remarkable pocket watch. The Grand Complication impressed at the Paris World Exhibition with its combination of seven different complications and received a medal.
Audemars Piguet was a relatively small manufacturer with no more than 50 employees until the 1950s. Up until that time, each watch was unique. The company then developed models that could be mass-produced. The company grew steadily, and by the 1970s, it employed more than a hundred watchmakers. However, the company has always remained family-owned. Audemars Piguet is he only luxury watch manufacturer that has not been sold by its founding families.
The founders' heirs continued to run the company and continued showing their passion for complicated watches. The heirs heralded a new era in the company and initiated the manufacture of wristwatches. Over time, the company produced extraordinary pocket and wristwatches, such as the Jules Audemars Equation of Time, which includes the display of the equation of time.
The Great Depression and the Second World War were followed by other successful decades for Audemars Piguet, which produced legendary models such as the Royal Oak. The watch designed by Gérald Genta changed was an initial failure but became perhaps the most essential model by Audemars Piguet, which is still popular today. To this day, these and other models are assembled by hand and meet the highest quality standards
Every year, Audemars Piguet produces around 26,000 wrist and pocket watches at its three locations in Meyrin, Le Locle, and Le Brassus. These watches are still among the luxury watches in the top price range. The label is proud of its celebrity fans, such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, who wore a limited-edition watch made for him in two of his films. A limited-edition with Michael Schuhmacher was also presented in Berlin in 2012. Seven small stars are shown on this watch, symbolizing his seven world championship titles.
Important Audemars Piguet Models
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak
One of the most famous models from Audemars Piguet is the Royal Oak, which is still part of the collection available today and is available in numerous designs. It was created in the early 1970s when cheap watches from Asian countries made life difficult for manufacturers of high-quality wristwatches. The Royal Oak was produced in 1972 and was the first luxury watch to have a steel case. Because of this case and its shape, it is still considered a particularly revolutionary design that greatly influenced the entire industry.
The Royal Oak ensured even more creativity in developing further innovations at Audemars Piguet and the use of rather unconventional materials. It became known in 1974 through a prominent owner, the head of Fiat, Gianni Agnelli. Since then, it has been one of the brand's most important models.
The Royal Oak, designed by Gérald Genta, was initially only available as a men's watch. Due to its great success, however, it was also launched as a ladies' watch in 1976.
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore
The Royal Oak Offshore was created as a new interpretation of the Royal Oak. Watches from the Royal Oak Offshore collection are insensitive to magnetic fields. They have mechanical movements with automatic windings and are still produced today in numerous designs with different cases and bracelets. The sporty luxury watches in the Royal Oak Offshore series are also available in versions for women.
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver
This luxury watch, which is also suitable for adventurers, is waterproof to 300 meters or 1,000 feet and is equipped with a rotating bezel that can be used to measure dive time. This model's increased luminescence ensures that the time can be easily read even at great depths. The Royal Oak Offshore Diver also has an automatic winding mechanism powered by the wrist's movement.
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Tourbillon
The extra-flat Royal Oak Tourbillon wristwatch, which is still part of the range today, was also developed from the Royal Oak. Its dial is adorned with the tapestry design, reminiscent of a ray of sun. Audemars Piguet presented the first wristwatch with a tourbillon to the public in 1986.
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept
The Royal Oak Concept collection for watch lovers has been available since 2002. These luxury watches allow a glimpse into sophisticated technology and are also elegant pieces of jewelry with beautiful aesthetic lines. They are available in many designs, from a sporty look to an elegant look.
Audemars Piguet CODE 11.59
In 2019, the CODE 11.59 was launched by Audemars Piguet. This was a new collection of luxury watches, round watches with an octagonal baseband, a subtle reminder of the Le Brassus manufacture's design history. The enigmatic name "11.59 CODE" is an acronym, C for Challenge, O for Own, D for Dare, E for Evolve, and 11.59 as a nod to history. "This is the minute before the new page in the brand's history."
Audemars Piguet Haute Joaillerie Sapphire Orbe
Comprising of more than 12,000 rigorously chosen stones, the Audemars Piguet Haute Joaillerie Sapphire Orbe watch is an exceptional Haute Horlogerie creation inspired by the winter landscapes of the Vallée de Joux.
Audemars Piguet Millenary
The Audemars Piguet Millenary collection is characterized by a particularly identifiable oval case, skeleton watches, tourbillon, minute repeater function, and off-center dial. This model, presented in 1996, was awarded at the Grand Prix de l'Horlogerie de Genève in 2011. It is made for both men and women.
Audemars Piguet Concept Supersonnerie
In 2016, the Concept Supersonnerie was presented and won the prize for mechanical exception at the Grand Prix de l'Horlogerie de Genève.
