Inspired by the Art Deco movement and architectural design, Holthinrichs watches offer some of the most unique timepieces available today. An independent brand based in Delft, The Netherlands, Holthinrichs utilizes a combination of modern technologies and traditional craft to create their timepieces, using 3D printing to manufacture their cases, but using skilled artisans to complete the case finishing. Holthinrichs offers a variety of timepieces connected by their architecture design inspiration, ranging from time-only three handed watches with conventional dials, to fully skeletonized movements with unique 3D printed bracelets that further amplify the watches structural design.

Holthinrichs History

Holthinrichs was founded by Michiel Holthinrichs. The son of an artist and an automotive engineer, he was born into a life combining creativity and functional design. He studied architecture at the Delft University of Technology, and worked in historical architecture and restoration. His time in Paris drew him to the design language of Art-Nouveau and Art-Deco, learning to pay special attention and appreciate the smaller details, and how they contribute to the whole. He quickly realized this translated to wristwatches, starting with servicing and selling vintage timepieces during his studies. He then set out to create intellectual wrist sculptures that are functional, beautiful, and meaningful pieces of mechanical art.

Today the Holthinrichs team manufactures their timepieces in Delft, including developing their own in-house caliber that has 50% of its manufacturing completed in the Netherlands. The cases are made utilizing 3D printing, providing a unique texture and the ability to create the architectural inspired design. The cases are finished by hand, utilizing traditional tools, including watchmaking tools that are over 100 years old. With a small team and modern technology, they are also able to offer a great deal of customization, ranging from custom straps and custom case engravings, to fully customized dials and movement decoration.

Holthinrichs Collections

Holthinrichs has developed a catalogue of six collections, all of which are based on their 3D printed titanium cases. Ranging from their entry level models with Selitta movements to the highly finished models with their in-house movement, each carry the brands signature design language.

Signature Ornament

The Signature Ornament collection is the entry point into the brand. With a 38.5m 3D printed titanium case, the twisted lugs demand attention. The Ornament collection is configurable with a choice of Black Rhodium, Silver Rhodium, 14k Yellow Gold Plated, or 18k Rose Gold Plated dial, and choice of calf leather strap. Inside is a customized Selitta SW-300 with white rhodium plating and custom 18k gold plated rotor.

Signature Delft Blue

With the same case and movement as the case and movement of the Signature Ornament collection, the Signature Delft Blue features a thin white ceramic dial, with in-house designed Breguet inspired numerals printed in Delft blue. With blued hands contrasting against the white dial, this timepiece harmoniously combines elements of traditional watch design with modern elements, creating a unique timepiece with a distinct personality.

Signature Lab Series

The Signature Lab Series continues to build upon the Signature line, but with a more intricate case featuring skeletonized twisted lugs, and the first Lab Series model has copper dial with a gradient blue that is achieved by hand by controlled oxidation of the dial. The unifying concept is Holthinrich's idea of “Horologie Brut,” relying on the use of pure metal materials and enhancing natural properties of the materials to achieve unique textures and finishes. While the first Lab Series is sold out, Holthinrich will continue to produce new models within this series.

Deconstructed

The Deconstructed line displays the pinnacle of Holthinrich’s current offerings. Featuring a skeletonized titanium case, skeletonized in-house developed movement, and a skeletonized 3D printed titanium bracelet that is custom fit to each owner, each element of the watch serves as a platform to display the brand’s creativity and ethos. The HW-M01 movement is skeletonized and finished with a combination of hand finishing and laser cutting and engraving. The combination of the case, bracelet, and movement make for one of the most unique timepieces available, and is an art statement for the wrist. The Deconstructed model is limited to 20 pieces.

Meteorite

Continuing from the Deconstructed model, the Meteorite takes a similar concept, but features a meteorite dial with the movements balance wheel exposed. The HW-M01 movement is finished by hand to achieve a similar texture to the meteorite dial, and the case is hand brushed. Instead of the titanium bracelet, this watch features an integrated rubber strap, available in anthracite, blue, orange, or green. The Meteorite model is a limited edition of 20 pieces. 

Aventurine

The Aventurine applies a more traditional approach to the Deconstructed platform. The HW-M01 movement features circular Côte de Genève and hand applied anglage.The dial is made of aventurine glass, and has sloped baton indices, similar to those found on the Deconstructed model. The alligator strap helps contribute to the more traditional look as well. This model is limited to 20 pieces.

How Much Do Holthinrichs Watches Cost?

Holthinrichs Movements

Holthinrichs watches utilize mechanical movements, both in manual and automatic winding variations. The Signature collection uses modified automatic Sellita movements, while the Deconstructed models use variations of the brand’s in-house HW-M01, which is 50% Dutch made, and is a manually wound caliber. Based on the Peseux 7001, the movement is modified for better stiffness and more accurate timekeeping through the inertia balance wheel. The movement bridges are made from German silver.

Holthinrichs Watch Colors

Holthinrichs offers a range of dial and strap colors, especially in the Signature Ornament collection. This collection includes black rhodium, white rhodium, 14k gold plated, and 18k rose gold plated dial options, with grey, cognac, or green for the straps (other options also available). Other special models include a white enamel dial for the Signature Delft Blue, an orange rubber strap for the Deconstructed Meteorite model, and a blue aventurine dial for the Aventurine model.

Holthinrichs Watch Materials

Holthinrichs utilizes grade 5 titanium as their primary case material, constructed via 3D printing, and finished by hand. Strap materials include calfskin leather, rubber, and 3D printed titanium depending on the model. The front and rear crystals are made of sapphire. There are special models that utilize aventurine glass and meteorite for the dial.
