Joshua Shapiro’s eponymous brand is a unique offering within the watch world. While the United States was once a hub for watchmaking, manufacturing of timepieces in the USA has largely disappeared. While there are a few watch brands within the United States, even fewer endeavour to manufacture watches completely within the United States. After a career in academia, Joshua Shapiro began by making traditional engine turned dials, progressed into making cases, and then has succeeded in producing movements in-house as well. J.N. Shapiro is one of a few brands based in the United States offering truly hand-made, high-end watches.

J.N. Shapiro History

Joshua Shapiro’s professional career prior to watches was as an educator (which he still does), with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in U.S. History. He started by making engine-turned dials by hand for other brands, before launching the Infinity Series of watches in 2018. With complex dials made of both traditional and exotic materials, J.N. Shapiro quickly gained notoriety within the watch world for bringing attention to this traditional craft. In 2021, the brand manufactured the first tantalum cases produced outside of Switzerland. J.N. Shapiro then released The Resurgence, a watch fully developed and manufactured in the United States.

Given the hand-made nature of J.N. Shapiro watches are customizable, allowing clients to choose materials, colors, and finishes to suit their tastes and needs. For those interested in traditional craftsmanship and supporting United States based artisans, J.N. Shapiro watches are a very compelling and unique offering for watch collectors.

J.N. Shapiro Collections

J.N Shapiro has a small number of models, but given the hand made nature of its watches, there are a number of options making each individual watch unique. There are currently two model lines that J.N. Shapiro offers; The Infinity Series and The Resurgence

The Infinity Series

The Infinity Series is the first production model that J.N Shapiro offered, and consists of a hand-engraved engine turned dial with the Infinity Weave guilloche pattern, sculpted hands, and an engine turned and engraved solid case back done by hand. The Infinity Series models come in a 37mm stainless steel case measuring 8.8mm thick, 45.1mm lug-to-lug, 19mm lugs, and with 50 meters of water resistance. Inside is the La Joux-Perret F200 manually wound movement with 21 jewels and a 90-hour power reserve. The two dial options consist of a Black Zirconium dial with white gold hands, or a Frosted Silver dial with rose gold hands.

The Resurgence

The Resurgence line is J.N. Shapiro’s flagship watch. With the case, movement, and dial manufactured in-house in the J.N. Shapiro workshop in California, it is one of the few watches available that are manufactured in-house in the United States. With the Infinity Weave guilloche pattern as the dial’s focus, each dial is customizable in color to the client. The 38mm case has a barleycorn engraved pattern along the side of the case, also done by hand, with lugs that screw into the case as to not disturb the continuous barleycorn engine-turned engraving. The in-house Caliber 26 is a high-end caliber, with finishing options harkening back to the peak of American watchmaking, mimicking finishing seen on high-end pocket watches. There are three different movement finish options, and the wheels in the gear train are made of 14k gold. The case can be made of 18k white or rose gold, tantalum, zirconium, or stainless steel.

How Much Do J.N. Shapiro Watches Cost?

J.N. Shapiro watches are hand-made and hand assembled, with a mentality of making the most perfect hand-made watch possible. As such, they do command a premium price, given the time and skill required to make these watches. The Infinity Series watches are priced at $26,000 USD, and The Resurgence watches start at $79,500, and go to $94,500 depending on the case material.

J.N. Shapiro watches use high-quality manually wound movements. The Infinity Series utilizes movements sourced from La Joux-Perret. The Resurgence series uses an in-house developed and manufactured movement. The Caliber 26 is hand assembled and finished in the J.N. Shapiro workshop in California, USA.

J.N. Shapiro Watch Colors

The J.N. Shapiro Infinity series comes in either a black zirconium or silver dial, paired with a black or brown strap respectively. The Resurgence series is customizable, allowing for a wide range of dial colors, allowing customers to have as conservative or outlandish of a watch as they wish.

J.N. Shapiro Watch Materials

J.N. Shapiro uses materials one would expect from a high-end watch. The case material for the Infinity Series is stainless steel. The Resurgence series offers different options, with stainless steel, 18k white gold, and 18k rose gold making up the traditional options, and zirconium and tantalum offering more contemporary and unique options. The dials are covered with sapphire crystals, and a sapphire display case back on The Resurgence series. The straps are premium leather straps with pin-buckles that match the case material.
