Sarpaneva History

Stepan Sarpaneva was born in Finland in 1970 into a family with a strong tradition of design and craftsmanship. His father, Pentti Sarpaneva, was a jewelry designer. Stepan graduated from the Finnish School of Watchmaking before continuing his education through WOSTEP in Switzerland.

His professional career included work with Piaget, Parmigiani, Vianney Halter, and Christophe Claret. At Parmigiani, he worked alongside fellow Finnish watchmaker Kari Voutilainen. These years exposed him to restoration, traditional finishing, complications, and highly unconventional independent watchmaking.

Sarpaneva returned to Finland and founded his own company in Helsinki in 2003. His workshop was established in the historic Cable Factory, where the brand remains closely associated with Finnish design and locally sourced steel.

The Korona case and expressive moon-face display became Sarpaneva signatures. The Korona K3 Black Moon won a Red Dot Design Award and two GOOD DESIGN awards in 2009. Sarpaneva Supernova

Supernova represents a new interpretation of one of Stepan Sarpaneva’s long-running ideas. Current 40mm models combine the sculptural Sarpaneva design language with natural stone, meteorite, or moonphase displays. Stone options include lapis lazuli, malachite, tiger iron, red jasper, and pietersite, giving each watch a naturally individual surface.

Sarpaneva Stardust

Stardust turns the night sky into a mechanical design theme. Current Mars and Pluto editions use the 42mm Korona case and the Chronode P.1003 automatic caliber, with small seconds positioned asymmetrically on the dial. Elaborate hand finishing and luminous treatments create strong depth, especially after dark. Mars and Pluto editions are produced in very limited quantities.

Sarpaneva Super1.2

Super1.2 offers a cleaner, more time-focused interpretation of the Sarpaneva aesthetic. Current versions include Blue, Salmon, Bronze, and Aubergine color treatments, with strap and bracelet choices available on selected references. Its 42mm proportions and complex metal dial still look distinctly Sarpaneva without relying on a moonphase complication.

Sarpaneva Lunations

Lunations is the technical centerpiece of the brand. It uses Sarpaneva’s manually wound in-house Moonment® caliber and displays an unusually large illuminated moon face. The lunar cycle is calculated so accurately that the display accumulates only about one day of error after 14,000 years. The current family also includes the more restrained Lunations Eclipse.
