Brand Review: Urban Jürgensen Watches - A Contemporary Mix of Traditional Watchmaking
With traditional hand craft and mechanical precision, Urban Jürgensen preserves the standards benchmarked by brilliant Danish timepiece maker for whom the company was named. The company officially began its operations in 1773 and over four generations, the mix of innovative and forward-thinking ideas of the Jürgensen dynasty helped in changing the way watches and clocks were made. The impact was not only limited to the family’s native Denmark but also spread across Switzerland.
Urban Jürgensen’s adherence to handcrafted processes for parts stands out of the crowd. Perhaps, most particularly the observatory-style hands that are blended with classic aesthetics make the watches more eye-catching. While most of the other timepiece makers make use of industrial manufacturing processes to make watch hands, Urban Jürgensen has artisans who craft watch hands in-house.
Let’s go through the best timepieces available in the market by Urban Jürgensen:
The Urban Jurgensen Alfred 40 Watch
Urban Jürgensen launched a 42mm-diameter version of Alfred in 2017 and the watch received enthusiasm by many timepiece connoisseurs. This watch had a mix of traditional watchmaking crafting with an idiosyncratic contemporary touch. As a result, we got a wristwatch that can pair with an elegant suit as perfectly as with a casual fit.
The Alfred 40 which is a 2mm smaller version of Alfred 42 and has a buffalo leather strap option and new folding stainless-steel clasp. The rest of the other features are the same for both variants.
The watch is named in tribute to the last watchmaker of the Jürgensen family, Jacques Alfred Jürgensen. The Alfred 40 comes in a styled case with legacy teardrop-shaped lugs that makes Urban Jürgensen watches recognizable. The polished steeled case is designed in a way that it blends with the precious ‘greeage’ dial. The dial has engraved inscriptions and the recesses are filled with lacquer. The clock has a subdial for seconds at 6 O’clock. The handcrafted hands escalate the elegance of the dial. They have a finishing of thermally blued steel arms and mirror polishing. It is said that a single set of these hands requires around 50 manufacturing steps over a single working day.
The Urban Jürgensen Calibre P4 powers the Alfred 40 and 42 and brings 72 hours of power reserve. The twin-barrel calibre operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour. The P4 Calibre is beautifully designed and the open-worked balance bridge can be seen from the exhibition case-back. It consists of hand-made chamfering, thermally blued screws, Geneva stripes radiating from the balance wheel, polished jewel sinks and recesses, and periage.
Urban Jürgensen One Watch
UJ had made its way in the sports segment recently with Urban Jürgensen One collection. As soon as it got launched, collectors started calling it ‘A new contender in the stainless steel sports timepiece segment’. It is the first range of sports watches from Urban Jürgensen. There is not even a single straight line visible on the seven-piece case which is smooth as satin. The bracelet tapers to the head of the watch, a graceful barrel-shaped watch head that features a polished bezel. The center of the dial features a grains d ́orge guilloché decoration to it.
Urban Jürgensen launched one collection in two forms and three color variants. The simplest one is the reference.5241 watch. This one is a simple three-hander with a date window and available in three different dial colors: Soft White, Charcoal Grey, and Urban Blue.
The second form of one collection is the reference 5541 GMT. This one has 2 extra pushers to control the GMT function forward and backward. It also has a subdial at the 6 O’clock which shows the home time in 24 hours format. Alike 5241, this watch also has a date window. For now, this version only comes in Urban blue color.
These new watches feature an automatic movement triggered by the P5 movement, made in-house by Urban Jürgensen. The skeletonized rotor, blue screws, and refined finishing add in the perfect blend of contrast to the silver-colored watch. With a beat rate of 21,600bph, It is precise enough and provides an accuracy of 1/6th of a second. The P5 movement features a fine-drawn single bit of gold in the Jürgensen shield which is accompanied by 22ct solid gold weights. And yeh, it is water-resistant up to 120 meters. The collection starts at $26,950
The Urban Jurgensen Reference Big 8 Watch
The urban Jürgensen Big 8, as you might have assumed, is a bigger version of the Reference 8 and comes in a 40mm diameter case. Though it is 3mm bigger than the previous version, it doesn’t feel big on the wrist. Maybe this is because of the use of very traditional mid-20th-century watchmaking design cues which has an engine-turned dial, recessed crown, slim stepped bezel, and the teardrop lugs are elegantly designed.
If we talk about the dial and case, they both are similarly elaborative. The teardrop lugs are hand polished and forged separately from the rest of the case before being soldered in place and the dial is produced by traditional engine turning, a real guilloché. The hands, on Reference Big 8 are of the heat-blued steel body, which gives them very detailed looks. The minute hand is slightly bent downwards from the tip, giving the watch an old-school appearance. The Urban Jürgensen Reference Big 8 is priced at $14,400 The Big 8 is a part of Urban Jürgensen Reference 1140 collection. Here are the rest of the collection details:

Let’s talk about the other best two of the Urban Jürgensen Reference 1140 collection:
Urban Jurgensen 1140L PT Blue Watch
The 1140L PT Blue is built of the finest metal, platinum. It is estimated that every year, 1500 tonnes of gold is mined, whereas merely 160 tonnes of platinum is extracted over the same period of time. The scarcity of platinum makes 1140L PT Blue particularly revered.
The hands in the PT Blue are quite slender and feels like they are conversing to the wearer. They are formed in white gold and the hour hand features an observatory styled diamond polished eye. The minute hand is gracefully stretched and appears to be kissing the dots situated in the chapter ring.
The platinum case of PT Blue is amazingly understated. It is formed of three parts, having just 40mm diameter and has a thickness of 10.50mm. Each case is cut from blocks of platinum and consists of the convex bezel. The watch has the P4 Movement of Urban Jürgensen. Decorated with 23 jewels, the balance has a frequency of 21,600 VpH (3Hz).
Urban Jurgensen 1142C CS Watch
The Urban Jürgensen Reference 1142C CS was awarded for the best watch in the Men’s Watches category at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève 2014. At first sight, it looks similar to other watches made by the brand. The watch evince beautiful aesthetics that are timeless and elegant, destined to be appreciated throughout the generations. It is housed in an 18-carat red gold case whose very creation is the paragon of perfection, standing in as a metaphor for an astonishing intellect.
The hand-wound dial has a delightful barley-corn motif centre-stage. The years of legacy has been magnificently retained with the observatory time-served hands. The chapter ring, encircling the dial canvas, incredibly interfaces with both the central sweep seconds hand and the minute hand. The hands are diamond finished by hand craftsmen to bring detail and are the legacy features of Urban Jürgensen watches. An arc-like reserve power indicator is positioned below noon and communicates to the wearer about the amount of energy held within the twin barrels.
