Laurent Ferrier Classic Tourbillon Teal Série Atelier
To celebrate 15 years of independent creation, Geneva-based watchmaker Laurent Ferrier returns to the origins of his horological adventure and unveils a new edition of his emblematic Série Atelier, paying tribute to his very first creation, the Classic Tourbillon.
A PLATINUM SETTING
This new version of the Classic Tourbillon features the iconic Classic case inspired by 19th-century pocket watches, with its smooth pebble shape. The Classic case, 41 mm in diameter and distinguished by its generously proportioned ball-shaped crown, is crafted in 950 platinum, which lends it a notable rarity. Indeed, this marks the very first time this precious metal has been used as a part of the LAURENT FERRIER collection.
UNDER THE SAPPHIRE: ENAMEL
Fitted with a brand-new dial, it nevertheless retains the signature features of the original Classic Tourbillon, such as grand feu enamel, Roman numerals and the railway minute track. This new dial, set on a base plate of white gold, showcases a teal grand feu enamel that harmoniously blends green and blue hues. To amplify the blue tones, the fine decals of the minute track and logo are transferred in sky blue enamel. The applied small seconds is framed by a bevelled white gold flange, hand-polished to perfection. Its markers are also executed in matching sky blue enamel. For enhanced legibility, a value dear to Laurent Ferrier, the Roman numerals around the hour circle are finely outlined in bright white enamel. The gold hands are Assegai-shaped for the hours and minutes, and baton-shaped for the seconds. It is a faithful reinterpretation of the original aesthetic, infused with a new vibrancy.
A CALIBRE THAT GOES BEYOND MERE AESTHETICS
In 2010, Laurent Ferrier marked the beginning of his independent career by winning the Men's Watch Prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève with his very first model, the Classic Tourbillon. That watch was equipped with an ingenious hand-wound movement fitted with a double balance spring tourbillon. In this case, the tourbillon is not a visual showcase but rather serves its original purpose discreetly: to ensure precision in timekeeping. The new Classic Tourbillon Teal – Atelier Series VII features the same LF619.01 calibre, albeit presented with a more contemporary finish.
Here, the côtes de Genève on the bridges give way to a horizontal satin finish combined with a ruthenium treatment. This modern finish contrasts beautifully with the moving components — engravings, gears, and balance wheel — which, for the first time in LAURENT FERRIER's history, are rhodium-plated, creating a uniquely harmonious visual effect. The sapphire crystal case back offers a clear view of this exceptional movement.
The double balance spring tourbillon cage evokes high-performance engineering. This complex mechanism pays tribute to centuries-old watchmaking craftsmanship. When Abraham-Louis Breguet patented the tourbillon in 1801, his invention countered the unfavourable effects of gravity on a pocket watch’s regulating organ when held vertically. By equipping the balance with two oppositely mounted springs, lateral displacement of the balance staff is also neutralised. The integration of these two systems combines their respective benefits, delivering exceptional accuracy along with a power reserve of over 80 hours. Chronometry enthusiasts will appreciate the precision and outstanding performance of this timepiece, whose beauty rivals its timekeeping precision.
Beyond the meticulously crafted architecture designed to showcase the finest components, the very construction of the calibre draws inspiration from the great 19th-century chronometry masterpieces. One such detail is its manual winding system featuring a long-blade click ratchet, recognisable not only by its elegant form but also by the delicate mechanical clicking sound it produces during winding.
THE ART OF TIME, CRAFTED BY HAND
Every component is meticulously hand-finished according to the finest watchmaking traditions, all carried out within the LF workshops. The tourbillon cage bridge alone features around thirty internal angles, each hand-finished by our specialised artisans. This bridge also displays various traditional finishing techniques such as horizontal satin-brushing, bevelling, frosting, and mirror polishing of the screws. These details exemplify LAURENT FERRIER’s unwavering respect for timeless haute horlogerie craftsmanship.
