The Moritz Grossmann HAMATIC Silver-Plated by Friction is a limited-edition anniversary timepiece created to mark the 200th birthday of the brand’s founder, Moritz Grossmann. This model reflects the manufactory’s commitment to combining innovative engineering, traditional watchmaking artistry, and refined aesthetics, while continuing the creative evolution of Grossmann’s original ideas.
At its core is the manufactory calibre 106.0, an automatic movement featuring an unconventional pendulum-style hammer weight. This “hammer automatic” system delivers highly effective winding and represents a modern reinterpretation of a historical concept further developed by Grossmann’s engineers. The movement also includes stop seconds for precise time-setting and showcases fine hand-finished details completed entirely at the manufactory.
The dial is a standout feature, crafted using a rare silver-plating by friction technique. This traditional process involves hand-brushing the surface with pastes and powders to create a fine-grained, velvet-like texture that softly reflects light. The result is a distinctive interplay of gloss and matte that maintains its radiance over time. Blue numerals, scales, and the vintage “M. GROSSMANN” logo—styled as it appeared in 1875—enhance the dial’s character. Notably, this model introduces Arabic numerals for the first time in the HAMATIC line, replacing the Roman numerals previously used.
The watch also carries forward signature elements inspired by Moritz Grossmann’s historical movements, including a large balance wheel, raised screws, and a three-quarter plate construction. The hands are meticulously handcrafted from steel and annealed to a blue hue, perfectly complementing the dial’s typography and overall aesthetic.
Housed in a three-part white gold case measuring 41.0 mm in diameter, the HAMATIC Silver-Plated by Friction is paired with a hand-stitched blue kudu leather strap. The timepiece is limited to just 18 pieces and features a special “1826” engraving on the balance cock, referencing the birth year of Moritz Grossmann.
Blending historical techniques with modern watchmaking innovation, the HAMATIC Silver-Plated by Friction stands as a refined tribute to Moritz Grossmann’s legacy and the enduring pursuit of excellence in Glashütte watchmaking.
