Bold depth, ever-changing light
The dial of the Super1 carries forward the distinctive design language of Stepan’s work, reimagined with a refined, almost traditional touch in a traditional design. The bold “Helsinki” pattern remains a defining feature, crafted with precision by Combleminé, the esteemed dial manufacturer led by Kari Voutilainen.
With its enclosed form, the Super1 dial plays with depth, shifting tones and contrasts as light moves across its surface. This interplay of color and shadow reflects the ever-changing world around us. Subtly transforming between day and night, just like the city that inspired it.
Stepan vividly recalls the inspiration behind the bold design of the Sarpaneva Super1 dial:
"One late night, walking home with friends, the full Moon was casting sharp shadows through the intricate iron gratings surrounding the trees on my street. For some reason, that image stayed with me.
The next day, I started sketching, cutting out patterns from paper, and layering them to see how the light would play through the forms. When I recreated the effect with metal components, a friend pointed out that it echoed the ‘corona’ seen during a solar eclipse.
With the Super1, I took that original idea and pushed it further. This time, I wanted something more aggressive, more sculptural - playing with depth, shadows, and contrast in a way that gives the dial a raw, powerful presence. It’s still born from that same fleeting moment of inspiration, but reimagined for something entirely new. Sometimes, it’s the things you pass by every day that hold the most potential - if you just stop to notice them."
The Super1’s distinctive indexes demand hours of meticulous hand-finishing - each one carefully filed and polished by hand. At just 0.3mm thick, the stainless steel components require an exceptionally steady hand and a keen eye for detail.
This Sarpaneva is now powered by the exclusive Modified Chronode P1003 Calibre, crafted for Sarpaneva. The winding mass featuring the iconic Sarpaneva Moonface relief, sculpted at the Candy Factory workshop.
