Louis Moinet, the chronograph’s inventor The recent discovery of a hitherto unknown timepiece is rewriting the history of watch development. It isn't often that new discoveries are made within the history of horology, let alone ones that bring historic names that may have been long forgotten to the attention of modern collectors.

The discovery of some of Louis Moinet's work not only brought his work to the forefront of the horology world's attention, it rewrote history and established new historical firsts. Moinet's academic background, astrological endeavors, and horological achievements are still reflected in the brand's modern history.

About Louis Moinet Jules Verne Watches

Louis Moinet Jules Verne ties in Moinet's astronomical studies, observing stars and planets with his telescope. His work creating the first chronograph was done so he could accurately set his telescope, timing the passage of stars, planets, and planetary moons. His astronomical studies served as the inspiration for the Jules Verne collection of watches.

With models connecting to the moon, earth, and sea, each model features noted gem dials used within watchmaking. Limited to 8 watches for each variation, collectors are able to choose their exact dial from the dials made available. Whether it is lunar meteorite, lapis lazuli, or opal, the brand has made 8 distinct examples of each for collectors to choose from.

Each of these three limited editions is housed in a 40.7mm 18k rose gold case with a titanium inner case. The movement inside is the caliber LM 135, a manufacture caliber with an off-center flying tourbillon, beats at 4hz, and has 26 jewels. The movement offers a 96-hour power reserve, and the case is water resistant to 30 meters.

Louis Moinet Jules Verne History

Born in 1768, Louis Moinet's career started in fine art, studying architecture, sculpture, painting, while still pursuing horology early on. He moved around Italy before settling in Paris after gaining a professorship at the Académie des Beaux-Arts. He continued to pursue horology, making it his primary focus in 1800.

It was then he became peers with many of the most historic names in horology, including Abraham Louis-Breguet. Working closely with Breguet from 1815-1823, Louis Moinet pioneered a number of invitations, including the first chronograph ever produced, which was also the first high-beat chronograph ever produced, able to measure with an accuracy of 1/60th of a second.

Today, the brand is an independent luxury brand led by Jean-Marie Schaller. After acquiring Louis Moinet's first chronograph, this watch served as an inspiration to bring Moinet's namesake back to modern horology.

Today, the brand creates high-end haute horology timepieces and is a member of the Foundation of High Horology (FHH). The Jules Verne collection combines a flying tourbillon with various stone dials, making a display of fine craftsmanship and mechanical mastery in a single timepiece.

The Louis Moinet Jules Verne Tourbillon features a flying tourbillon, a complication made to negate the effects of gravity on the balance of clocks and pocket watches, thus increasing the effective accuracy of the timepiece.
