Longines Spirit Chronograph L3.8220.127.116.11 Watch Review
Longines has a long history as one of the most coveted manufacturers for pioneering aviators due to their watches' stability and precision. Longines watches have been faithful companions to such giants as Amelia Earhart and Howard Hughes, and the Spirit collection is dedicated to the pioneers who continue to inspire. Over the years, the brand has retained a passion for their watchmaking legacy, despite being one of the companies with the most production volume.
Longines is known for creating either heritage-inspired collections or genuinely modern designs. With the tagline, "The pioneer spirit lives on," the Spirit collection stands out as a mix of traditional design and modern details, blurring the past and present. The Longines Spirit collection was launched in September 2020.
The Longines Spirit chronograph combines the functionality of a sports watch with timeless vintage elegance.
Look and Feel
The 42 mm stainless steel diameter case flaunts a gorgeous satin finish, whereas the sloped angle is polished, as well as the lugs. This subtle interplay of different textures draws in the eye and provides visual interest. The matte black dial gives off an air of mystery and gives a nice contrast to the bright case. At 16.45mm, it's not too thick, making it comfortable for daily or formal wear.
This watch features a vintage-looking brushed leather strap in a dark, muted brown, with a pin buckle. The color scheme of black and brown with a pop of silver is neutral enough to work with a wide variety of outfits but still produces visual interest.
The functions of the Longines Spirit Chronograph L3.818.104.22.168 include hour, minute, second, chronograph, and date.
Markers are delicate and have a diamond-shaped tip. They’re treated with Super-LumiNova, along with the numerals and handset, which makes them visible in low light conditions. Beyond the apparent practicality, the coating gives a visual impact by producing a beautiful electric blue color in the dark. In full light, the color is a subtle light cyan. This feature, along with the design of large Arabic numerals, is a nod to aviation heritage; Longines watches have been celebrated for readability, which is crucial during flights.
Significant depth is created with the minute track, which is slightly elevated above the center of the dial and the three sub-dials, which once again proves the attention to detail. The date dial is located near the 4:30 mark. The arrangement within the dial creates a technical look while still being easily readable.
Below the 12 o'clock mark and the Longines logo, there are five delicate silver stars. Besides being a fun detail, they have roots in the long history of the company. The five stars demonstrate the highest internal rating Longines gives to its movements.
This watch features a luxurious sapphire crystal covered with several layers of anti-reflective coating on both sides, while the back of the case is made from stainless steel. It's engraved with the winged hourglass logo, the Longines trademark for over a century. The logo has been with Longines since 1889, making it the oldest registered trademark of any watchmaker in the world.
The prominent screw-in crown for correcting or setting the time is a nod to old-school pilot watches and consistent with the aviation theme. An extra pusher is located near the 10 o'clock mark, whose function is to advance the date. This screw-in pusher is big and user friendly, making it difficult to change the date accidentally. The start/stop and reset pushers for the column-wheel chronograph are located on the right side.
The movement is certified by COSC, which guarantees accuracy ranging from minus 4 to plus 6 seconds per day. Longines own caliber L688.4 powers the chronograph - a three register chronograph, and the self-winding movement is equipped with antimagnetic silicon hairsprings that offer 64 hours of power reserve. It is made to be lighter and more durable than any traditional balance spring. It's inspired by the delicate balance of airplane wings.
This piece is water-resistant up to 10 bar or 100m, proving the spirit of adventure woven through this Longines collection.
The Longines Spirit Chronograph L3.822.214.171.124 embodies the true spirit of legendary aviation quests in a sleek, modernized package. The chronograph looks technical enough to make the wearer feel like an explorer, but it's still legible and fit for everyday wear. The dark color scheme is understated at first but sparks visual interest with steel details and subtle textures. COSC certification, along with the exceptional silicon hairsprings and the 64-hour reserve, make this piece reliable and timeless.
