About Lederer

Lederer as a brand was founded by Bernhard Lederer, who has made a name for himself as a prestigious watchmaker. Lederer timepieces take inspiration from the technological developments of historic watchmakers, and further develop and refine them to create modern timepieces that are examples of master watchmaking craft and technical innovation in the world of mechanical horology.

Lederer History

Lederer’s first technological development was a table clock that features a gravity escapement and a 1000 year calendar with moon phase display. Developed in 1986, the movement in this clock also featured temperature compensation and fusée and chain drive train mechanism. In 1996, Bernhard Lederer was involved with the Monumental Countdown Clock in Brazil for the country’s 500th anniversary of discovery. The technical challenges faced included developing clocks that withstand the wet, salty air, and hot temperatures being located closer to the equator and near the Atlantic Ocean. In 2007, he developed a triple-tourbillon wrist watch, with two flying and one semi-flying tourbillons, with escapements he manufactures in-house, a huge technical achievement. This watch won him “The Most Revered Watch of Year” award at the largest collector gathering in Asia. In 2016, Lederer developed the most anti-magnetic caliber for the German Navy, able to withstand 100,00 gauss. Based on an ETA 2897, this feat displays a more practical but still incredibly impressive technical achievement by Bernhard Lederer.

After a decade of research and development, Lederer developed the Central Impulse Chronometer. Inspired by Breguet and George Daniel’s achievements. This timepiece features two escapements with their own independent gear trains and remontoire d’égalité. This timepiece won Lederer the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie at the GPHG awards in 2021, and laid the foundation for Lederer’s recent work and timepieces.

Lederer Collections

The current Lederer watch offerings consist of the CIC collection, watches that feature Bernhard Lederer’s dual-escapement watch. There are two collections currently available, the CIC 39mm, and the CIC 44 Triple Certified Observatory.

CIC 39mm

The CIC 39mm collection is a series of timepieces that pack Lederer’s in-house developed and hand finished dual-escapement movement into a more compact package. Considering the movement measures 35mm in diameter, the case seemingly wraps around the movement. The white gold models are available with green, silver, or blue dials, and the rose gold version has a black rhodium dial.

CIC 44 Triple Certified Observatory

Taking Lederer’s quest for accuracy a step further, this iteration of the dual-escapement movement has been tested for accuracy by three chronometer certifying organizations: Besançon, France, Glashütte, Germany, and the Observatoire Chronométrique in Geneva, Switzerland. Housed in a 44mm wide 904L stainless steel case, the movement achieved an average deviation of 0.5+/- seconds a day across five positions and 0.18+/- average deviation per day. Limited to 8 pieces, each version comes with each of the three chronometer certificates.

How Much Do Lederer Watches Cost?

Lederer is one of the few fully autonomous brands, developing and manufacturing their watches in-house, with components manufactured and finished by hand. For over 19 years, the brand has been a leader in both technological developments and craftsmanship in haute-horology. With such fine craftsmanship and attention to detail, Lederer timepieces command an appropriate cost, making them a very high-end brand. The CIC 39mm watches start at 136,800 CHF and the CIC 44 Triple Certified Observatory costs 146,000 CHF.

Lederer Movements

Lederer watches utilize manually wound movements that are developed and manufactured in-house, and finished by hand. The brand’s special movement utilizes a unique design that houses two independent mainspring barrels, two independent gear trains, two constant-force mechanisms, and two independent escape wheels, all done in the name of developing one of the most accurate mechanical watches available. The movements are the main focus of Lederer timepieces, which is why the large caliber is on full display through the exhibition case back.

Lederer Watch Colors

Lederer watches do stick with more traditional tones, with some colors available. The CIC 39mm models are available with silver, black, blue and green dials, while the CIC 44 Triple Certified Observatory is only available with a silver dial. Colorful strap options are available, allowing buyers to match straps to suit their taste.

Lederer Watch Materials

Lederer watch cases are made of either white or rose gold for the CIC 39mm models, and the CIC 44 is made in 904L stainless steel. The straps are saddle stitched leather straps, with a pin buckle made to match the case material. The dial and movement are viewed through sapphire crystals.

Lederer Watch Types

Lederer watches may be best described as contemporary designed dress watches. The round case design, time-only format, and use of straps lean more towards the dress watch territory, while the dial design, open view of the escapement, and proportions are very modern, even on the CIC 39mm model. Made for the most devoted collectors of horology, these timepieces will work with a wide variety of attire, but are made to be precious items that are to be coveted.
