Zenith – A Collector's Treat
The epitome of classy, brilliant, luxury watchmaking, Zenith is a Swiss watchmaking brand famous for being a master of accuracy. A zenith is the highest point reached by a celestial body in the sky. Originally called Manufacture Zenith, the brand has been around for 155 years and has successfully created a legacy of excellence.
At just 22 years of age, Georges Favre-Jacot founded the company during the mid-19th century. The company was built on the idea of striving to do more than what’s already been done, breaking production barriers, and exceeding limits. Today, this brand personifies precision and fine mechanics. In November 1999, LVMH purchased Zenith and made it a part of their watch and jewelry collection, joining the likes of featured brands like TAG HEUER & Hublot.
A brief history of Zenith
In 1948 Zenith launched a caliber 135 timepiece, which made its mark because it featured a relatively small seconds hand. This movement received numerous awards for design and accuracy. By 1960, Zenith was the first to introduce a caliber 5011K timepiece. This caliber was supposed to be the next big thing and was slated to be used in almost every marine chronometer, pocket watch, and famous Pilot Montre d’Aéronef Type 20. The Trade Press even awarded Zenith with the Movement of the Year award for its ultra-thin automatic Elite movement, which used computer-assisted design technology for its development.
The famous Zenith El Primero
104 years after it was founded, the company unveiled its legendary El Primero Caliber 3019 PHC. Before its release, not having an automatic chronograph was a significant problem that all the manufacturers strived to solve in mechanical horology. Being the first-ever automatic chronograph movement produced, the El Primero had extraordinary properties. The balance frequency in this movement was 36,000 A/h, which means it could measure 1/10th of a second, and it had pinpoint accuracy.
However, shortly after the release of El Primero, the Quartz craze arose and the limelight shifted. Everything changed in the blink of an eye, and all praise now went toward the Quartz movement. Zenith announced it would thus discontinue producing the chronograph. However, Charles Vermot, a watchmaker who had put his heart into the movement's making, did not want to let it go. When the Quartz fad settled down, Vermot revealed to the world what he had been doing during those times, and thanks to him, the company was able to manufacture the El Primero movement in 1984 once again.
Famous brand Rolex has continued to use this movement in several of their watches, specifically in one of their most famous timepieces, the Rolex Daytona Chronograph. In 2019, the 50th anniversary of the beloved El Primero, Zenith released a limited edition trio to commemorate the monumental occasion.
The production of ultra-precise timepiece movements from this venerable brand has continued throughout the decades, and the brand will continue to prevail with its exclusive variety of watch movements. The brand leaves no stone unturned to achieve perfection and offer timepiece enthusiasts the very best. The brand believes in reaching infinite heights of performance and achievement by continuing to release incredible timepieces. For years, people have been collecting Preowned Zenith watches.
