Kurono Tokyo: Brand Information, Origin, and History

Kurono Tokyo is a Japanese independent watch brand created by celebrated watchmaker Hajime Asaoka. The brand was established in 2019 with a clear purpose: to make Asaoka’s design language more accessible to collectors who admired his rare, handmade atelier watches but could not easily acquire them.

Kurono Tokyo’s origin is closely tied to Asaoka’s position in Japanese independent horology. Before Kurono, Hajime Asaoka was known for highly limited, handcrafted watches produced under his own name. His atelier pieces were admired for their technical ambition, but they were expensive and produced in very small numbers. Kurono Tokyo was created as a more attainable expression of the same design philosophy.

The brand’s first Kurono Tokyo watch series was announced for sale in June 2019. Early models included classic time-only watches such as Mystic Gray, Midnight Blue, and Eggshell White, produced in small quantities. These early releases helped establish the brand’s identity: compact cases, refined dials, strong Art Deco influence, and Japanese attention to finishing and proportion.

The name “Kurono” is connected to the Japanese rendering of “chrono,” written in hiragana as クロノ. Many early dials also carried the wording “Bunkyō Tokyo,” referring to the Tokyo area associated with Asaoka’s design studio and the brand’s beginnings.

Design is the heart of Kurono Tokyo. The watches are not positioned as mass-market luxury products; instead, they focus on visual balance, elegant proportions, and distinctive dial work. Asaoka’s design language often uses Art Deco-inspired numerals, polished cases, box sapphire crystals, curved or cylindrical dials, and carefully chosen colors. The goal is to create watches that feel vintage in spirit while remaining modern in construction.

Kurono Tokyo’s collections have expanded beyond simple time-only watches. The brand has released chronographs, calendar watches, Grand Series pieces, salon editions, special projects, and anniversary models. Some models use traditional Japanese craft references, including urushi lacquer and special dial treatments. Many releases are limited, and the brand is known for watches selling out quickly at launch.

A major reason collectors follow Kurono Tokyo is the direct involvement of Hajime Asaoka. He is responsible for the design direction, proportions, dial concepts, and quality expectations behind the watches. The brand’s appeal comes from this link between independent watchmaking and relative affordability: Kurono Tokyo offers collectors a way to experience Asaoka’s aesthetic without entering the much higher price range of his handmade atelier pieces.

Kurono Tokyo has also gained international recognition. Its watches have appeared among nominees at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, one of the watch industry’s best-known awards platforms. This recognition helped strengthen Kurono Tokyo’s reputation outside Japan and confirmed its place among modern independent watch brands.

Today, Kurono Tokyo operates as a small, design-led Japanese watch brand with a global collector base. It maintains physical salon spaces in Tokyo and Shanghai, but most releases are still handled through the official Kurono Tokyo website because production remains limited. The brand’s identity remains consistent: Japanese-made mechanical watches, designed by Hajime Asaoka, with Art Deco character, careful detailing, and a mission to make independent watch design more accessible.
