Nivada Grenchen reissued the iconic Chronoking “Paul Newman” reference featuring a bold orange dial and a hybrid meca-quartz movement. Building on the success of that release, the Swiss watchmaker now presents another limited iteration of the model, but this time, it’s equipped with a restored vintage Valjoux cal. 23 VZ movement.
Appearance-wise, the new 38mm Chronoking timepiece boasts a bold and sporty ‘70s-inspired design that’s almost identical to its hybrid meca-quartz counterpart. What sets the new version apart aesthetically is it features two Paul Newman-style subdials, as opposed to three. The former model also only featured “CHRONOKING” alongside the brand logo, while this reference is further labeled “AVIATOR SEA DIVER” on its dial.
The highlight of the watch is undoubtedly the vintage hand-wound chronograph caliber it houses, which has been fully restored. The Valjoux 23 VZ was first released in 1916 and endured a 58-year-long run. A testament to durability and reliability, the caliber provides indications for hour, minute, second, date, chronograph and tachymeter, complete with a 48-hour power reserve.
